Russia's war in Ukraine is the most dangerous situation for Europe since World War II - NATO Secretary General
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says that Russia cannot be allowed to win its war against Ukraine, because that would be the biggest threat to European security since World War II
Radio.Svoboda has reported about this.
Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance may have to continue supporting Ukraine with arms and other aid for a long time to prevent Russia from winning.
"It is in our interests that such an aggressive policy does not succeed... This is the most dangerous situation for Europe since the Second World War. It is happening in Ukraine, it is terrible, but it would be much worse if there was a war between Russia and NATO", NATO Secretary General said.
The NATO Secretary General confirmed the alliance's intentions to protect all 30 member countries.
"If President Putin even thinks about doing something similar with a NATO country, as he did with Georgia, Moldova or Ukraine, then the whole of NATO will be immediately involved", Stoltenberg said.
The Russian Federation's war in Ukraine prompted Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO. Currently, this request has been ratified by 23 of the 30 member states, including the US.
"This is not only an attack on Ukraine, an independent democratic state with a population of more than 40 million people, it is also an attack on our values and the world order we seek", the head of NATO said about the war.
It is known that seven member states have not officially reached an agreement on the accession of Finland and Sweden yet - the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and Turkey. Turkey is demanding the extradition of dozens of government opponents it calls "terrorists" from both countries in exchange for support for their entry into the alliance.
