Ukraine sets new record: HUR drone attacks radar in Russia over 1,800 km from border
On May 26, a Ukrainian intelligence’s drone struck the Voronezh M long-range target detection radar station in the city of Orsk, Orenburg region, Russia
The Ukrainian Pravda reported the information, citing a contact in the HUR.
“The Ukrainian drone traveled over 1,800 kilometers to reach the enemy's facility, setting a new record for the range of destruction for kamikaze drones,” the source said.
The impact's consequences are being determined.
Russian sources reported that a UAV "fell near Orsk" and speculated that the target might have been a military facility.
Previously, the furthest target attacked by Ukrainian drones was in Salavat, Bashkortostan, 140 kilometers closer to the Ukrainian border than Orsk.
Later, the Ukrainian project Schemes published satellite images of the HUR drone strike’s aftermath on a Russian radar 1,800 kilometers from the border.
The May 27 image shows dark spots in the area of the radar that were not there before, likely traces of a fire caused by a UAV hit. At the same time, the photo's resolution does not allow to assess the extent of possible damage to the Russian station.
The Voronezh M is part of Russia's long-range stationary over-the-horizon radar family. These radars detect space and aerodynamic objects, including ballistic and cruise missiles. Operating in the meter waveband, they have a target detection range of up to 6,000 km.
