Russia changes its approach to mass attacks on Ukraine - UK intelligence
Invading Russian forces are trying to target the defense industry, not energy facilities, as they did last winter
This is reported by the UK Defence Ministry, citing intelligence data.
“Since 29 December 2023, Russia has increased the intensity of its long-range strike operations against Ukraine. Its forces have committed a significant proportion of the stock of air launched cruise missiles and ballistic missiles they had built up over recent months,” the statement reads.
The researchers note that this approach contrasts with last winter's attacks when the main target of the Russian Federation was Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
At the same time, UK intelligence officials note that the decision to attack the defense industry may be temporary, but it indicates a change in the tactics of shelling Ukraine.
“These new operations suggest at least a temporary change of approach in Russia's use of long-range strikes. Russian planners almost certainly recognise the growing importance of relative defense industrial capacity as they prepare for a long war,” intelligence says.
- On the morning of January 2, Russian troops attacked Ukraine from strategic aviation. A series of explosions occurred in Kyiv and Kharkiv. As a result of the attack, people were killed and injured, and houses were destroyed.
