Biden avoids sudden movements

A brief explanation of the U.S. election and foreign policy

A day visit to Germany is more about a gesture of respect for Europe's largest partner. But the canceled major visits to Germany and Angola are about focusing on domestic priorities before the election.

The Biden-Harris administration is trying to focus on economic issues and social problems that directly concern American voters.

Foreign policy issues (assistance to Ukraine or Taiwan, escalation in the Middle East), although important, are not a priority for ordinary voters, especially in the face of domestic instability. And the level of internal tension in the United States is very high and has been growing steadily since Trump's first term. Although the foundation for it has been laid over the past 30 years.

The Democratic administration, realizing that any foreign policy decisions can become a field of criticism from opponents, avoids excessive emphasis on international issues. They are trying to shift attention to domestic stability, jobs, and inflation. Because these topics resonate more with voters. And Harris and Biden have no right to dilute their agenda now if they want to win the election.

Therefore, before the election, they will seek to avoid foreign policy crises or sudden moves that could split voters. Therefore, the Biden administration is trying to prevent too much escalation in the Middle East before Election Day, balancing the task of supporting Israel with the task of preventing a major war.

It is the same with Ukraine. Given the choice between the extremely important Ramstein (which can be organized in November-December) and the extremely important domestic issue, the latter will be chosen.

The situation will change after election day. Although even if Harris wins, it will still be necessary to force Trump to recognize the election results, attention to foreign policy will increase again and the window of possible solutions will expand due to the reduction of electoral pressure.

And yes, we can criticize Biden and co. for the fact that all important decisions could have been made earlier. And in general, “damn de-escalators”. But this will not change anything. We are working with the situation as it is.
