Nuclear safety and protection zone: IAEA Director General offers UN solution to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant problem
Rafael Grossi proposes that the United Nations Security Council creates a nuclear safety and protection zone at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
The IAEA Director General wrote about this on Twitter.
"I have just addressed the UN Security Council and launched a proposal to create a nuclear safety and protection zone in Zaporizhzhia. This is based on the findings of our mission at the nuclear plant there, outlined in our new report," Grossi wrote. “The current situation is untenable and the best action to ensure the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities and its people would be for this armed conflict to end now.
However, until this happens, “urgent interim measures are needed to prevent a nuclear accident caused by military means. This can be achieved by the immediate establishment of a protection zone. We are ready to immediately start the consultations leading to the establishment of a nuclear safety and protection zone," Grossi said.
