IMI has updated its list of transparent and responsible media on its website.

In the first half of 2024, the following editorial offices were included in the List of Transparent and Responsible Media, also known as the White List of the highest quality Ukrainian online media: Suspilne, Radio Liberty, Ukrayinska Pravda, Babel, Hromadske, Texty, ZN.ua, Espreso, Slovo i Dilo, Ukrayinsky Tyzhden, and Hromadske Radio.

These are the results of a two-stage in-depth monitoring of online media conducted by the Institute of Mass Information every six months.

Five new media have been added to the list: Radio Svoboda, Texty, Hromadske Radio, Ukrayinskyy Shlyakh and Slovo i Dilo.

At the same time, the following media outlets were removed from the list in the first half of 2024: Ukrinform, NV and Liga.

The research methodology is available here.

At the first stage of the study, 50 popular Ukrainian online media selected on the basis of previous IMI monitoring data, as well as SimilarWeb and Gemius, were assessed for manipulation, fakes, and black PR.

At the second stage of the study, the media that passed the first stage were analysed according to the following criteria: standards of balance, reliability and separation of facts from comments, presence of jeans, sexism and hate speech, harmful content, as well as transparency - availability of contacts on the website, editorial policies, transparency of media ownership.

According to the analysis, the level of compliance with professional standards on the resources included in the White List is about 96% on average. The central news feed on these sites did not contain jeans (although there were materials with improper labelling), hate speech, sexism and fakes.

The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) is a media NGO that has been operating since 1996. IMI defends the rights of journalists, analyses the media sphere and covers media-related events, counteracts propaganda and disinformation, and provides media with protective equipment for business trips to the war zone during the Russian-Ukrainian war since 2014.

IMI conducts the only monitoring of freedom of speech in Ukraine and a list of quality and responsible online media, and documents Russia's media crimes in the war against Ukraine. IMI has representatives in 20 regions of Ukraine and a network of hubs called Media Base to provide uninterrupted support to journalists. Among IMI's partners are Reporters Without Borders and Freedom House, and the organisation is a member of the International Freedom of Expression (IFEX) network.
