New historic high: number of refugees worldwide exceeds 100 million
For the first time in history, the number of people forced to flee due to violence, human rights abuses and persecution has exceeded 100 million.
The UN shared the figures on their website.
"100 million is a sobering and disturbing figure. It is a record that should never have been set," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.
"These statistics should be a wake-up call for resolving and preventing destructive conflicts, ending persecution and addressing the root causes of innocent people leaving their homes," he said in a statement.
The number of displaced people worldwide has risen to 90 million by the end of 2021 due to new waves of violence or protracted conflict in countries such as Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The war in Ukraine has forced 8 million people to flee their homes and 6 million to leave the country. The 100 million people displaced worldwide make up 1% of the world's population.
