"If both countries agree": UN leadership supports IAEA visit to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
UN Secretary General António Guterres considers any attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant "suicidal" and calls for international inspectors to be granted access to the plant.
Spokesman of the UN Secretary General Stefan Jarrik made a statement, Ukrinform reports.
"The Secretary-General made it clear in Tokyo that any attack on a nuclear power plant is 'suicidal,'" Jarrick said.
The press secretary of the Secretary General also refuted the false narratives of Russian officials who, by not allowing the IAEA mission to the facility, blame the UN for this.
"Over the past few days, there have been repeated comments by various Russian officials accusing the UN Secretariat of either canceling or blocking the visit of the IAEA mission to the ZNPP," Jarrick said.
Guterres' spokesman emphasized that the IAEA acts independently, making decisions within its competence, and the UN secretariat does not have the authority to block or cancel any action of the IAEA.
According to Jarrik, the UN secretariat "in close contact with the IAEA has assessed that Ukraine has the logistics and security potential" to organize a visit by IAEA representatives to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, provided that Ukraine and Russia agree to this
