"Ї" symbolises Ukraine's independence: resistance paints Ukrainian letter in temporarily Russia-occupied Mariupol
In Mariupol, activists of the resistance movement are protesting against the invading Russian forces in an original way, painting the letter "Ї" [yi], which exists only in the Ukrainian language, in various locations of the city
The Mariupol City Council shared this information on Telegram.
On the morning of September 5, on the Telegram channel, the Mariupol resistance movement called on Ukrainians in the city to join such a protest and to paint the Ukrainian letter "Ї" which they chose as their symbol, in various locations.
"It's time to raise your head! Russians must know for sure that they are on someone else's land. We didn't call them. They have no place in our Mariupol! As a sign of protest, "Ї" is on all the city's squares. In parks, squares, on poles, and fences. With a pen, chalk, and marker. "Ї" - as a sign of Ukraine's independence. "Ї" - as a sign of resistance. "Slaves are not allowed to heaven." We are not slaves," the members of the resistance movement noted.
One of the first places where the 'letter of resistance' was depicted was the city center: here "Ї" appeared on a pavement tile near the monument to Taras Shevchenko.
The Mariupol City Council emphasized that Ukrainian resistance is gaining momentum in the Russia-occupied city.
"Residents are dissatisfied with the Russian occupation authorities. They are increasingly recording the movement of enemy equipment, reporting on traitors, and emphasizing that Mariupol is Ukraine," the city council said.
Meanwhile, the Russian occupiers have already drawn attention to the facts of disobedience. They called the resistance movement of Mariupol residents a "partisan terrorist movement", called on citizens "to be careful and remember the rules of personal safety in the event of a terrorist act", and to report potential or committed "crimes" to employees of "law enforcement agencies".
