70,000 Ukrainian refugees are expected in Norway in 2 years
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says that the war in Ukraine has led to a historically large flow of refugees to the country
This is reported by NRK.
“So far, 34,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Norway this year, and more than 30,000 of them are from Ukraine,” Støre said in his speech at the parliament.
He added that the scenarios of developments in the near future are uncertain.
“But now we have to plan for a total of 40,000 displaced persons from Ukraine this year, 2022, and we estimate that another 30,000 may arrive in 2023. In addition, there will be asylum seekers from other countries and transit refugees,” he said.
According to the head of the government, so many refugees have never settled in Norway before. This year there were more asylum seekers than in the last four years combined.
“Russia's war is changing shape - terrorizing the population of Ukraine in order to weaken its resilience after facing resistance on the ground. And on the other hand, there is the pressure they are now putting on countries that support Ukraine through energy and other complex threats. These are two dimensions that we must understand,” he said.
