Zelenskyy talks about Johnson's call in the hours following the Russian invasion
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was one of the first world leaders to call him on the morning of February 24 immediately after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine
Zelenskyy wrote about this in a column for the Mail on Sunday.
"Early in the morning on the day of the Russian invasion, Boris was one of the first world leaders with whom I had a conversation. Over time, such calls became regular, which provided us with better coordination of international actions aimed at countering Russian aggression. At every meeting and conversation, Boris had one very good question: what else, what else do you need? This has become our motto, guaranteeing effective progress. Believe me, not many politicians are ready to do this," Zelenskyy said.
He also emphasized that the anti-tank systems that Ukraine received from the UK after Johnson's visit in February helped in the first days of a full-scale invasion.
"Prime Minister Johnson visited Kyiv at the beginning of February. Our frank, open conversation was immediately reinforced by the first deliveries of anti-tank missiles. These weapons played a role in stopping the advance of seemingly endless Russian armored columns," Zelenskyy said.
The President of Ukraine also mentioned Johnson's visit to Kyiv on Ukraine's Independence Day.
"Last month, Ukraine celebrated the 31st anniversary of our independence. Boris Johnson was with us again, who was welcomed by ordinary Ukrainians. We even started to address him warmly and with humor - 'Boris Johnsonuk' is a Ukrainian surname, if you emphasize the last syllable - inspired by his Instagram account @borisjohnsonuk," Zelenskyy said and expressed hope that relations between Ukraine and the UK will remain as close after the appointment of a new prime minister, whose name will be announced on September 5 after Johnson's resignation. The current head of the UK Foreign Ministry, Liz Truss, is considered the favorite in the race for the post. She is contesting the seat against former finance minister Rishi Sunak.
