Zelenskyy and people of Ukraine are officially nominated for Sakharov Prize
The European Parliament announced the nominees for the Andriy Sakharov Freedom of Thought Award, the main award of the European Union in the field of human rights - the winner will be determined on October 19

The list of nominees for 2022 includes citizens of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the Colombian Truth Commission, Brazilian activist Sonia Guajajara, and Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akle, who died in May 2022.
Zelenskyy's candidacy is supported by the "European Conservatives and Reformists" party, while the Ukrainians were nominated by "Renewing Europe" and "Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats". The "European People's Party" proposed to award the Sakharov award to the "brave people of Ukraine", represented by Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On October 19, the European Parliament will choose the winner. The award ceremony will take place on December 14 at the session in Strasbourg.
In different years, South African President Nelson Mandela, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, human rights defender Lyudmila Alekseeva, and Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov (2019) were laureates of the award. In 2020, the Sakharov Prize was awarded to the Belarusian opposition, and in 2021, to the Russian politician Oleksey Navalny.
