"Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant belongs to Ukraine, cannot be used for military operations": G7 urges Russia to leave the site
Russian forces must leave the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant immediately, without additional conditions. A 10-km demilitarized zone must be created around the plant.
This is stated in the statement of the group on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons of the G7 countries, published by the US State Department.
"These actions significantly increase the risk of a nuclear accident and endanger the population of Ukraine, neighboring states, and the international community... The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the electricity produced by it rightfully belong to Ukraine", the letter says.
In a statement signed by the group of non-proliferation directors of the G7 countries - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, as well as the chief diplomat of the European Union, they condemned Russia's actions at Ukraine's nuclear facilities and the nuclear blackmail that Ukraine and the whole world is subjected to. The leaders of the countries supported the joint position of the heads of foreign affairs of the G7 members regarding the provision of nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
The statement states that any attempts by the Russian Federation to disconnect the station from the Ukrainian energy system are unacceptable. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant itself should not be used for military operations or storage of military materials.
The G7 participants came to the conclusion that "the Russian Federation should immediately withdraw its troops beyond the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine and respect the territory and sovereignty of Ukraine".
However, the Russians continue to make provocations in all directions from which the mission is supposed to arrive at the plant.
