"We cannot afford to waste any more time": IAEA makes statement on situation at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
The organization's experts express concern over the fact that "in the last day, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe lost connection with the power line twice".
This is stated in the statement of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
"At the same time, all safety systems remained in working condition," - emphasize the authors of the document with reference to the general director of the station. However, as a result of these incidents, the NPP reactors were disconnected from the grid for some time, so their emergency protection systems were activated.
The ZNPP is currently connected to the Ukrainian power grid, the organization added.
The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, once again expressed "deep concern about the nuclear security at the facility, which is controlled by Russian forces, but, as before, is maintained by Ukrainian personnel", and emphasized the urgency of the visit to the station by the agency's independent experts.
"The IAEA maintains close contacts with Ukraine and will publish updated information as it becomes available," the IAEA assured.
Separately, Grossi recalled that three of the four high-voltage power lines connecting the ZNNP with the energy system of Ukraine were damaged during the shelling and ceased to perform their function.
“Almost every day there is a new incident at or near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. We can’t afford to lose any more time. I’m determined to personally lead an IAEA mission to the plant in the next few days to help stabilise the nuclear safety and security situation there,” Director General Grossi said.
