Wagner's arrival in Belarus will create tension between Belarusians and mercenaries – Ukrainian diplomat
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus (2010-2011), diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi, believes that Wagner can engage in subversive actions from the territory of Belarus
He stated this on Espreso.
“The units of Wagner PMC are not expected to be capable of much, but there is some overlapping information. On one hand, there are reports of some Wagner units arriving in Belarus, and at the same time, Russian media suggests a possible attack on the Suwalki Gap. This gap is a narrow strip of land between Belarus and Kaliningrad in Lithuania that has been a topic of discussion,” he said.
According to Bezsmertnyi, Lukashenko sees the arrival of the Wagnerites in Belarus as a training opportunity for Belarusian units.
“It is insulting to the military to suggest that criminals will train military personnel. The consequence of their arrival will be increased tension between the Belarusians and these units. Moreover, when they arrive in Belarus, they are likely to engage in more than just drinking; they may also resort to robbing the local population. This will undoubtedly deepen the tension in Belarus. The number of Wagner troops and their weapons is relatively small, but such units often carry out sabotage attacks, so border control and preparedness for such actions are necessary,” he noted.
