US House of Representatives to consider recognising Russia as a sponsor of terrorism
After the adoption in the US Senate of a resolution recognising the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism, a similar draft law has been submitted to the House of Representatives by a group of congressmen from the Democratic and Republican parties
This is stated in the bill submitted to the US House of Representatives by a group led by Democrat Ted Lew.
"The United States must use all available tools to stop Russia's violent aggression in Ukraine... Relying on sanctions granted by Congress, the bill will further isolate Russia and inflict greater economic consequences on the Putin regime", he said.
The document provides that from the moment of its adoption, the Russian Federation "will be considered to be a recognized country or government that has repeatedly supported acts of international terrorism". But, unlike the Senate resolution, the House bill does not include a call to the State Department.
According to Politico, last week Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi warned Secretary of State Antony Blinken that if his department does not recognize Russia as a sponsor of terrorism, Congress will.
Co-author of the document, congressman from the Republican Party Adam Kissinger believes that its adoption "will cut off the power of Putin and his friends from the civilized world and label Russia as a global exile - like Cuba, Syria, North Korea, and Iran".
It is known that recognition of the country as a state sponsor of terrorism involves a number of restrictions: from economic sanctions against partner states of the Russian Federation to the freezing of state assets and exports to Russia. However, US officials have previously indicated that the current sanctions against Moscow essentially correspond to the declaration of Russia as a sponsor of terrorism.
