US has confidence in Ukrainian government's commitment to safeguarding weapons supplied - US official
The US has confidence in the Ukrainian government's committment to correctly accounting for and securing the weapons it receives in international support for its right to defend itself against Russian aggression
Bonnie Denise Jenkins, US under secretary for arms control and international security made the US position clear in comments to the Financial Times, published in an article titled "NATO and EU sound alarm over risk of Ukraine weapons smuggling."
"NATO Allies are in full solidarity with the leadership and people of Ukraine in the heroic defense of their country. We are helping to defend Ukraine's basic right to self-defense with an unprecedented level of support. We are confident in the commitment of the Ukrainian leadership to the proper preservation and accounting of the Allies' weapons," it is noted.
Earlier, the representative of the European Union voiced the same position. Peter Stano, the leading Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU, noted: "We have created mechanisms to monitor and control that equipment provided by EU member states is used as intended. Our aid is subject to strict controls and guarantees, particularly after its delivery."
According to him, this includes monitoring that the use of the supplied military equipment complies with international human rights and international humanitarian law, regular reports and/or on-site monitoring of the equipment, if necessary and when conditions allow.
