Ukrainian people, Zelenskyy are nominated for Sakharov Prize honoring Freedom of Thought
The European People's Party has nominated the Ukrainian people and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
This was reported in the press release of the European People's Party.
"We have no doubt that the brave people of Ukraine, led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, deserve to receive this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. They continue to defend European values on the battlefields every day. I hope that our candidacy will be supported politically by all groups in the European Parliament," the MEP of the parliamentary group, the vice-chairman of the European People's Party for foreign affairs, Rasa Juknevičienė.
The European People's Party also emphasized that they have supported Ukraine since the very beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. The party insists on specific measures to counter international crimes committed by Russia. It was the EPP that was the first to support the embargo on Russian oil, coal, nuclear fuel, and gas.
The Sakharov Prize For Freedom of Thought is an annual award of the European Parliament, which was launched in 1988. It is awarded for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the development of democracy and the defense of the rule of law, respect for international legislation, and the protection of minority rights. Candidates for the award are nominated by members of the European Parliament. In order to win, a participant must be supported by at least 40 deputies who have the right to vote for only one candidate.
