Ukraine’s dilemma about Iran is consequence of Obama's policy – political analyst

Questions abound about Iran's ability to produce missiles and deadly drones. How do they manage this if the country has been under sanctions for a long time?

A few facts.

The US imposed sanctions on Iran immediately after the Islamic revolution in 1979. In 1995, the sanctions were expanded to include firms controlled by the Iranian government. In 2006, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding the suspension of the uranium enrichment program. The Iranians started it, relying on the opportunities created by the Russians as part of the implementation of the Bushehr NPP project.

"After the signing of the so-called Nuclear Agreement on January 17, 2016, the US and the EU announced the lifting of sanctions against Iran. About USD 100 billion in international and foreign financial institutions were also unblocked"

In 2010, the UN imposed sanctions on Iran, explaining that Tehran was developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a peaceful nuclear program. The EU and US governments imposed additional sanctions against Iran, limiting, among other things, cooperation in the oil and gas sectors.

But after the signing of the so-called Nuclear Agreement on January 17, 2016, the US and the EU announced the lifting of sanctions against Iran. About USD 100 billion in international and foreign financial institutions were also unblocked. Iran announced its readiness to export 500,000 barrels per day with a further increase in exports to 1 million barrels.

Today, the US, UK and France say that by supplying drones to Russia, Iran is violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which approved the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six nations.

Under this resolution, the conventional arms embargo on Iran remained in effect until October 2020. Trump, who unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018, sought to extend the embargo, but the Security Council rejected that demand, allowing Iran to export weapons. There is no need to explain who did not vote.

"The Nuclear Agreement of 2015 turned out to be a strategic defeat for the US and a gross mistake of Barack Obama"

As they say in Western capitals, this resolution, which limits the export and import of missile components and related technologies, is valid at least until October 2023. Drones also get there. That is, even in such a crooked version, the Iranians brutally violate the resolution.  Probably, in order not to fall under new sanctions, they lie openly.

And more. The 2015 Nuclear Deal turned out to be a strategic defeat for the US and a gross mistake by Barack Obama. Due to the resources Iran received after signing it, they launched new missile programs, ramped up drone production and began an unprecedented expansion into the Middle East. The deal also undermined US alliances with Israel and Saudi Arabia and paved the way for Russian expansion. All that we have now in Ukraine and in the Middle East are the consequences of Obama's policy.
