Ukraine only needs political decision on NATO membership - Reznikov
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov says that since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine has de facto become a NATO member, and only the political decision needs to be made for Ukraine to become a de jure member
He made the statement in an interview to the Spanish outlet La Razon.
The Defense Minister confirmed that Ukraine has de facto become a NATO member. "Yes, we use their standards and weapons. There is a great deal of interoperability in intelligence, training, use of arsenal, military medicine... After this war, the only thing left is a political decision to become a de jure member. Russia is the biggest threat to NATO for the next ten years, as determined at the Madrid Summit, and no one has such direct experience of fighting and defeating them as we do. What better reason could there be than that? They need us."
Oleksii Reznikov also denies the statement that NATO is helping Ukraine in the confrontation, but not providing opportunities for victory.
"We see that the initial expectations have been exceeded, and they believe in us. All the weapons they have supplied us have been used in great victories, and the stakes have risen accordingly. When I asked in Washington for these Stingers before it all started, I was told that it was impossible, that it was illegal, and then that it was a matter of political restraint. Two months later, the first batch from Lithuania arrived with the approval of the White House. And so it goes with everything. Nothing is impossible for me," the minister emphasized.
In particular, he claimed that Ukraine did not need NATO troops, and the leadership did not even ask for them. Oleksii Reznikov added that the country has sufficient human capital, and only weapons and training are needed.
