Ukraine should be provided with accession plan, security guarantees at NATO summit - Poland's Prime Minister
Polish Prime Minister reaffirms Warsaw's support for Ukraine's plan to join NATO, which would provide certain security guarantees at the NATO summit in Vilnius
Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki made the statement during a speech at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, TVN24 reports.
According to the Prime Minister of Poland, Ukraine "has proven that it belongs to the free world, wants to defend our values: freedom, sovereignty, solidarity," and therefore it should receive a direct path to NATO membership, which would include security guarantees.
"The NATO Summit in Vilnius is the best place for this. I hope that this will happen, although it will not be easy to ensure it," the Polish Prime Minister said.
Morawiecki also emphasized the need for strong support for Ukraine to confront Russia, including weapons needed for the future Ukrainian counteroffensive.
"I think this is one of the most important issues - I have serious concerns that public opinion in Western Europe, perhaps in the US, is getting tired. I see this fatigue everywhere, especially in Western Europe," he said.
In Russia, the Polish prime minister added, the situation is different: public opinion supports Putin and his actions, "just as German public opinion supported Hitler's actions in the 1930s."
"Therefore, we should not count on big revolutionary changes in Russia, while Putin is counting on such changes in the West. This is something that causes me serious concern," Morawiecki said.
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, responded to the Polish Prime Minister's words.
"Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki reaffirmed Warsaw's support for Ukraine's NATO accession plan, which would provide certain security guarantees, at the NATO summit in Vilnius. Morawiecki said this during a speech at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, DC. I am grateful to our friends and allies. This is important support."
