UK, US warn they will consider a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant grounds for activating NATO's Article 5
The head of UK House of Commons' special committee for defence, Tobias Ellwood, has said that in the event of a radiation leak due to Russia's attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP), NATO should activate Article 5 of its Charter
Ellwood wrote about this on Twitter.
"Any intentional damage that would cause a potential radiation leak at a Ukrainian nuclear reactor would be a violation of Article 5 of NATO", Ellwood said, commenting on the article on Russia's preparations for provocations at a captured nuclear power plant.
A member of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Adam Kinzinger, supported the UK and emphasized that in the event of a radiation leak, people in NATO countries would die, and therefore Article 5 would be automatically invoked.
"It's not even discussed. Any leak will kill people in NATO countries. It's automatically Article 5".
According to Article 5 of the charter, in the event of an armed attack on any of the Alliance states, all other NATO members will consider this act as an attack on all of them.
