The US prepares to accept 100,000 Ukrainian refugees in summer
At least 71,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the United States since March. Earlier, President Joe Biden said that the United States would shelter 100,000 refugees from Ukraine.
This was reported by The Guardian.
The newspaper reports that 71,000 Ukrainians have entered the United States since March. According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 15,000 Ukrainians have now entered the country after applications were approved under the Unity for Ukraine sponsorship program. Another 23,000 people were approved but have not yet arrived.
Since the program's launch in April, sponsors - including friends, relatives, NGOs and church organisations - have applied online to support more than 60,000 Ukrainians who want to come to the United States.
The publication notes that in recent years the United States has become an increasingly hostile environment for many migrants and refugees, but Ukrainians are mostly met without controversies.
According to the UN, at least 12 million Ukrainians have been displaced so far. Almost 53 million of them sought asylum in European countries. It is estimated that about 7 million Ukrainians are internally displaced.
