Tent camp for Ukrainian refugees will be created at Berlin airport
Ukrainian refugees arriving in the German capital in search of temporary shelter will be accommodated in a temporary shelter at the former Tegel Airport
This is stated on themayor.eu portal.
"The former Berlin Tegel Airport is likely to become a refuge camp for 3,600 refugees, although this was not the original plan. Until now, the historic airport served mainly as a registration and diversion center for asylum seekers who arrived in Germany from Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian invasion of their country," the message says.
It is noted that about 1,500 Ukrainian refugees - most of them mothers and children - have found temporary shelter at the Tegel airport. The usual housing for refugees in the German capital with 28,000 places is already full.
German officials resorted to such measures due to the expected increase in the flow of refugees from Ukraine as Russia is constantly shelling the country's infrastructure.
Therefore, the Berlin government plans to equip two large tents with heaters at the airfield of Berlin Tegel Airport. A third terminal for registration of arrivals was also opened there and 900 new beds were installed. Tents at the airport are planned to be equipped by the end of the month.
