Russian forces deliberately struck Mariupol drama theater, where civilians were sheltering - Amnesty International
Amnesty International, investigating the Mariupol drama theater bombing, has concluded that Russian forces deliberately bombed the theater, knowing full well that hundreds of civilians were sheltering there
Amnesty International shared the investigation.
They said that after interviewing many people who survived the bombing of the drama theater, they gathered digital evidence and concluded that Russia's March attack on it was likely deliberate, even though they knew that hundreds of peaceful Ukrainians were sheltering there.
"After months of rigorous investigation, analysis of satellite imagery and interviews with dozens of witnesses, we concluded that the strike was a clear war crime committed by Russian forces," said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
The organization also said that the attack was almost certainly carried out by a Russian fighter jet, which dropped two 500-kilogram bombs on the theater building, which exploded close to each other at the same time. It is likely that the blow was struck from a fighter such as the Su-25, Su-30 or Su-34. Such fighters are located at Russian airfields near the Ukrainian border. They were often used over the south of Ukraine.
"The International Criminal Court, and all others with jurisdiction over crimes committed during this conflict, must investigate this attack as a war crime. All those responsible must be held accountable for causing such death and destruction," she added.
Amnesty International has considered several alternative theories about who may be responsible for the attack, but based on the evidence, investigators have concluded that a deliberate air strike on the Mariupol drama theater is the most plausible explanation.
