Russia is not afraid of punishment for war crimes, because it hopes for the so-called immunity from possession of nuclear weapons – Zelensky
The President of Ukraine states that Russia does not believe in the punishment for crimes committed during the war in our country, because it hopes to be forgiven through nuclear weapons.
The Ukrainian Truth reports this with reference to the speech of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for the specialists of the Royal Institute of International Relations Chatham House.
“Why is Russia doing all this? Because they think that if they are brought to justice for such crimes, it will be in decades since now. They simply do not believe that the international community can bring to justice those who have nuclear weapons,” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President noted that Russia has shown it neglects all international conventions, law, human protection and the inviolability of state borders. By killing, raping and torturing Ukrainians, the invaders showed “they hate life itself, everything lives”.
Zelensky noted there are huge differences in values between Russia and civilized countries.
Therefore, Ukraine's Western partners must unite to speed up international investigations and trials to punish Russian war criminals. The president also acknowledged that justice in international law does not usually happen quickly.
