Russia is gradually turning into a giant North Korea - diplomat Yelchenko
Volodymyr Yelchenko, diplomat and Ukraine's former permanent representative to the UN (2015-2019), noted that the session of the UN General Assembly emphasizes Russia's isolation, and that practically the whole world has recognized it as an aggressor due to its war against Ukraine
"Espreso.TV" told it live on air.
The diplomat commented on the new accents of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, which began work on September 12 in New York.
"I made a conclusion for myself from the meeting of this session and how it differs from the previous ones, that in fact there is a complete isolation of Russia. The club named after the Russian Federation includes Eritrea, Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and several other countries. At this General Assembly even in the speeches of China and India, which took a neutrally positive position towards Russia, a completely neutral attitude is clear. In addition to isolation, practically the whole world has recognized that Russia is an aggressor," the diplomat said.
Volodymyr Yelchenko added that in almost 90% of the speeches of the heads of state and government, the theme was not just the war in Ukraine or the conflict, as some countries expressed before, but now everyone is talking about Russia's war against Ukraine, and that it was Russia that unleashed this war.
"For the first time from the rostrum of the General Assembly, I heard statements that directly call for the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the UN and the Security Council. For the first time, the President of the United States spoke about the reform of the Security Council. And the next step, I believe, will be to talk about the place illegally occupied by the Russian Federation, because it took over the place of the Soviet Union in the UN in December 1991. Also, Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, in his speech directly said that Russia, as an aggressor, has no right to continue to have the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council. That means the process has ended," Yelchenko emphasized.
The former representative of Ukraine at the UN noted that at this General Assembly there were statements regarding direct accusations of nuclear terrorism by Russia, which violates the 1968 treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. By the way, on the basis of this agreement, the infamous Budapest memorandum was signed, which Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said was a piece of paper without legal force.
"This is Russia's attitude to international law and the existing order in the world. This country is gradually turning into a giant North Korea, which does not pay attention to any international laws, but simply does what it wants," the diplomat concluded.
