NATO will defend Lithuania if Russia invades - Stoltenberg
NATO will defend 'every inch' of Allied territory if Russia invades the Baltic states.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made a statement, Liga.Net reported.
He answered a journalist's question about NATO's reaction to a possible Russian invasion of the Baltic states.
The Secretary General reminded that NATO exists to protect all Allies of the Alliance.
"Most of NATO's rapid reaction force is now stationed in the Baltic states," Stoltenberg said.
According to him, the purpose of increasing the presence on the eastern flank is to send a signal that the Alliance is ready to defend its countries.
"We are ready to protect and defend every inch of our territory, including, of course, Lithuania and other Baltic countries. In doing so, we provide reliable deterrence, the purpose of which is not to provoke conflict, but to prevent it," he explained.
The NATO secretary general said they were "concerned about increasing military power" in Kaliningrad.
"I'm convinced that Moscow, President Putin, understands the consequences of attacking a NATO-allied country: it will provoke a response from the entire Alliance," Stoltenberg concluded.
