NATO approves defense plan in case of Russian attack
On Monday, July 10, NATO approved regional defense plans that detail how to respond in the event of a Russian attack
Reuters reported this, citing anonymous sources.
In recent decades, the Alliance has not seen the need for large-scale defense plans, but now, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO has adopted a plan for a possible conflict with Russia.
The allies managed to reach an agreement despite Turkey's blocking of regional plans. Reuters cites certain geographical wording, such as that concerning Cyprus, as the reason for the blocking.
"Excellent for the alliance. Turkey had to compromise and lift linkage," one diplomat told Reuters.
In developing its regional plans, NATO will also provide guidance to countries on how to upgrade their forces and logistics.
The need to finance these changes is one of the reasons why the Allies intend to raise the target for the Alliance's military spending. NATO officials estimate that it will take several years to fully implement the plans, although they emphasize that the alliance can go into combat immediately if necessary.
