In the event of missile attack on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, it doesn't matter whether plant operates or not - expert on nuclear energy
An accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after a possible missile strike by the Russians will be of about the same scale: whether the plant is operating will not greatly affect this
Nuclear energy expert Ludvig Lytvynskyi shared the details with Espreso TV.
"Measures are now being taken to cool down the 6th power unit and the plant will be completely shut down. I don't see anything good in this. This decision and its implementation are entirely the responsibility of the Russian Federation. Now the nuclear plant is under the management of representatives of Rosatom," he said.
According to the expert, they bear full responsibility for what is happening there, and will happen in the near future at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
He answered the question whether the complete shutdown of the nuclear power plant would be the right step against the backdrop of Russian shelling.
"In the event of a missile strike that breaks the confinement and the reactor body, there is no difference. The accident will be of about the same scale. If the nuclear power plant is turned off, the most short-lived radionuclides will decay by then, but this does not protect against medium- and long-lived radionuclides. That is, the damage that will be caused to the population and the environment will be comparable," Lytvynskyi concluded.
