"In the event of a Russian nuclear attack on Ukraine, there will be a powerful, non-nuclear military response" - Borrell
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, says that if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine, the West's response will be powerful, but not nuclear.
He said this at the opening of the European Diplomatic Academy.
"There is a nuclear threat. Putin says he is not bluffing, but he cannot afford to bluff. It is clear that people support Ukraine. NATO, the US and the EU are not bluffing either. We are serious," Borrell said.
According to him, if the Russian Federation dares to use nuclear weapons, the West's response will be non-nuclear, but such a move by the Russian Federation will lead to "not nuclear, of course, but a powerful military response."
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed a similar position earlier.
"Our doctrine is based on the fundamental interests of France. They are clearly defined, and they do not foresee direct intervention at all, if, for example, there was a ballistic nuclear attack on Ukraine or on the region," Macron said.
According to him, France only helps Ukraine to defend itself, but does not enter the conflict, "attacking the Russian Federation".
