IAEA Director General is ready to lead mission to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to strengthen security
Mariano Grossi has offered to head the agency's mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) to strengthen its safety measures.
The IAEA Director General stated this at the meeting of the UN Security Council.
"I am personally ready to lead such a mission," Grossi emphasized.
"The mission to the facility will give us the opportunity to take urgent measures regarding safety guarantees by checking the state of reactors and equipment, nuclear materials, fresh and spent fuel storage," added the head of the IAEA.
Equipment that provides remote data transmission for the IAEA also needs to be maintained, he said.
According to him, the IAEA was ready to conduct such a mission back in June, "but, unfortunately, due to political factors and other considerations, this did not happen."
Grossi reiterated that any military activities on and near the station must be stopped immediately, as they pose a threat to nuclear safety.
