"Can hit EU, Turkey, Georgia": Zelenskyy calls for tough sanctions against Russia due to its actions on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated the need for new, tough sanctions against Russia and Rosatom over the risk they pose to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant caused.
Zelenskyy said this in a video message on the evening of August 15.
"This issue has already been brought to the highest international level - the UN and the IAEA. Of course, Russian nuclear blackmail is also discussed between states. There is a corresponding statement from the foreign ministers of the G7 - they clearly understand that Russia is responsible for this nuclear crisis. But we need to move on from discussions and calls for new tough sanctions against Russia, against Rosatom and the entire nuclear industry of the terrorist state. All Russian forces must immediately withdraw from the territory of the station and neighboring areas - without any conditions," Zelenskyy said.
The president emphasized that in the event of an incident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the consequences will affect EU countries, Turkey, Georgia and more distant regions.
"Any radiation incident at the Zaporizhzhia NPP can be a blow to EU countries, Turkey, Georgia, and countries from more distant regions. Everything depends only on the direction and strength of the wind. If a catastrophe occurs due to Russia's actions, the consequences can also hit those who remain silent for the time being," Zelenskyy said.
The president also expressed the opinion that the failure of the world community to influence Russia and protect the nuclear plant will mean a loss in the fight for nuclear safety.
"For many decades, the world has fought for proper control over all activities with nuclear materials and radiation safety. And if the world does not have the strength and determination to protect one nuclear plant, it means that the world will lose. There is still a chance to prevent this loss," concluded Zelenskyy.
