Belarusians celebrate Freedom Day
On March 25, Belarusians around the world celebrate their unofficial independence day. The holiday, called Freedom Day, is banned in the country ruled by self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko. It is celebrated secretly and can only be done freely abroad
A specially created website tells Belarusians how to join the celebration.
This year the Day of Freedom marks the 105th anniversary of the 1918 declaration of an independent Belarus and the establishment of the Belarusian People's Republic (BPR)
However, just like the Ukrainian People's Republic, the young state did not last long.
Just like Ukraine, the sovereign territory of Belarus was divided between the Soviet Union and Poland under the terms of the 1921 Riga Treaty.
On the occasion of the holiday, today, on March 25, 2023, Belarusians in Poland are holding a solemn march in the centre of Warsaw. The same rally is taking place in Gdansk, reports the Basta Telegram channel, which is opposed to the Lukashenko regime.
Opposition leaders, including the head of the Joint Transitional Cabinet, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and the commander of the Kastus Kalinouski Belarusian Volunteer Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, whose soldiers took the oath of allegiance to the people of Ukraine exactly one year ago on the Day of Freedom, Denis "Cat" Prokhorov, addressed the Belarusians with congratulating speeches.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine also congratulated Belarusians on the holiday.
However, in today's Belarus, it is not possible to freely celebrate March 25.
According to the Nasha Niva newspaper, riot police buses are circling Minsk and looking for people with the prohibited white-red-white Belarusian national flags.
