Austria shelters more than 70,000 Ukrainian refugees
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Austrian municipalities have received and provided for more than 70,000 people from Ukraine.
The Austrian Association of Municipalities President Alfred Riedl shared the news in an interview.
"Since February 24, 2,093 Austrian municipalities have been providing assistance to refugees from Ukraine, as well as organizing humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war, we have received and provided for more than 70,000 people from Ukraine," he said.
According to him, in addition to accommodating refugees and sending humanitarian aid, Austria provided fire engines to Ukraine. The country will also help rebuild Ukraine after the victory. As part of the reconstruction cooperation, the president of the association visited Ukraine.
"I visited Kyiv, Lviv and the Transcarpathian region. It was an exchange of views with Ukrainian authorities directly on the ground on humanitarian support and reconstruction assistance. A visit to Bucha and a conversation with Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk were especially painful for me. I saw the scale of destruction and talked to the mayor about the suffering, anxiety and fears of the population, which prompted me to continue to promote support for the reconstruction of Ukraine by Austrian municipalities. It also made me realize how bad the situation should be in the east, where fighting is taking place," said Riedl.
