NATO-Ukraine Council meeting: allies commit to strengthening Ukraine's defense
During a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting on August 28, NATO members confirmed an increase in military assistance to Ukraine
This was reported on the NATO website.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who chaired the meeting, emphasized that Ukraine is intercepting Russian missiles daily and saving countless lives. However, Ukraine's ability to sustain its defense requires additional supplies and support.
“In the wake of the latest Russian assault, Allies today reaffirmed they are stepping up their military aid to Ukraine. We must continue to provide Ukraine with the equipment and munitions it needs to defend itself against Russia’s invasion. This is vital for Ukraine’s ability to stay in the fight,” Stoltenberg added.
During a video meeting with NATO members on August 28, Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov updated Allies on Ukraine's security situation and immediate needs.
"Two days ago, Russia launched over 200 missiles and drones, killing innocent people and damaging critical infrastructure. I briefed our partners on this situation and discussed plans for providing more air defense systems and missiles," the minister said.
He also noted that Ukraine will continue to work with its allies, including through bilateral talks, to establish an air defense shield - a protective "security belt" over the western regions of Ukraine.
"I appreciate our allies' ongoing support and their commitment to helping us. More countries are now backing the removal of restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons for self-defense under international law," Umerov concluded.
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured that the German draft budget for 2025 provides 4 billion euros for military assistance to Ukraine, and also spoke about a loan to Kyiv from the G7 countries.
