US supports idea of creating "demilitarized zone" around Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant
The US supports calls to create a "demilitarized zone" around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine
CNN wrote about this with reference to the words of the spokesperson of the US State Department.
"The fighting near the nuclear plant is dangerous and irresponsible - and we continue to call on Russia to cease all military operations on or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities and return full control to Ukraine. We also support Ukraine's calls to create a demilitarized zone around the nuclear power plant", the spokesperson said.
The publication reports that Russia is accused of using the nuclear power plant as a military base. Last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was quoted as saying that "Russia is using this station as the equivalent of a human shield, but a nuclear shield in the sense that it is firing at Ukrainians from the site of the facility".
"And, of course, the Ukrainians cannot and will not shoot back in order to prevent a terrible accident at the nuclear power plant. Therefore, this is the height of irresponsibility", he said.
