Ukraine to amend laws on 18- 25-year-olds in the Armed Forces
In the coming days, the Office of the Ukrainian President plans amendments to laws and presidential decrees covering the conscription of men aged 18 to 25
Mykola Shchur, advisor to the Department of National Security and Defense under the Presidential Office, shared the information with TSN.
“There will be a whole range of changes to both legislation and presidential decrees. Different levels of amendments to the documents are expected. I think there will be a presentation in the coming days. Technical details are being agreed upon now, something else may change,” said the advisor.
According to Shchur, the necessary legal changes were developed by a working group consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and NGOs.
The proposals may be reviewed by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
The President's Office emphasizes that this is a voluntary contract for men aged 18 to 25 who are not subject to mandatory mobilization, and they will be encouraged to participate, including through financial incentives.
- The Ukrainian government is firmly opposed to mobilization starting at age 18, a stance that contrasts with positions advocated, particularly in the United States.
- Currently, those fit for military service between the ages of 18 and 25 can only join the army voluntarily, by signing a contract.
