Lukashenko introduces death penalty for treason for officials and military
Self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signed a law introducing the death penalty for high treason for officials and the military
This was reported on the website of the self-proclaimed president of Belarus.
Lukashenko's press service notes that the main purpose of the document is to “strengthen counteraction to extremist (terrorist) and anti-state crimes.”
The law introduces the possibility of death penalty for high treason if committed by an official or military officer.
The document also establishes an additional penalty for 'anti-state orientation' – a fine of up to 50,000 basic units (as of January 1, 2023, this is 37 Belarusian rubles, or about 14 US dollars).
As explained by the self-proclaimed president's press service, this punishment is intended to ensure compensation for damage and prevent the continuation of criminal activity.
In addition, the law introduces criminal liability for propaganda of terrorism, discrediting the armed forces, other troops and military formations, paramilitary organizations, and violation of requirements for the protection of state secrets.
The period of detention for people suspected of treason, conspiracy or other actions aimed at seizing state power, espionage and agent activity is increased from three to ten days.
At the same time, it is envisaged to exempt from criminal liability people who were preparing to attack internationally protected institutions or commit sabotage, but who abandoned their intentions and contributed to the prevention of crimes.
