Russia strengthens air defense around Moscow to 'more effectively' counter drone attacks - British intelligence
In recent weeks, Russia has rebuilt its air defense around Moscow in an effort to "more effectively" defend itself against drone attacks, which the city is now frequently subjected to
The UK Ministry of Defense has said this in a report.
It is noted that since the beginning of September 2023, Russian SA-22 air defense systems around the capital have been installed on high towers and ramps.
British intelligence adds that after the strikes on Engels and Ryazan air bases in December 2022, Russia also positioned Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun systems on the roofs of official buildings in Moscow.
"This will almost certainly to allow the system to detect and engage UAV-type targets. However, it is probably also intended to act as a high-profile reassurance to the public that the authorities have the threat under control," the British Ministry of Defense emphasizes.
Attack on Moscow on September 7: what is known
On Thursday, September 7, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported another drone attack on the Russian capital and said that air defense was working.
It was noted that the wreckage fell near the Zhukovsky airport. Windows in neighboring houses were blown out.
However, according to the Moscow mayor, there was no damage or injuries at the site of the crash.
At the same time, the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported a large fire in the Moscow region, without specifying the exact location.
The Russian Defense Ministry traditionally blamed Ukraine for the attack. It added that two more drones were allegedly shot down that day over the Rostov region of Russia.
