Putin legalizes mobilization of convicts, except for terrorists, traitors, pedophiles
Russian citizens who have unexpunged or outstanding convictions for a number of serious crimes can be mobilized, according to a new law
The corresponding law was signed by Vladimir Putin today, November 4, Russia’s TASS news agency informs.
The law excludes only those convicted of child sex abuse, treason, hostage-taking, spying or terrorism, extremism, vehicle theft, founding illegal armed groups, and the attempted assassination of a government official, etc.
It allows the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of parolees or recently released Russians who were previously prohibited from serving in the army.
Lawyers say that such legalization indicates plans for a new wave of mobilization and will allow law enforcement authorities to put pressure on ex-convicts forcing them to join the war against Ukraine.
In other decrees, Putin, in particular, gave "volunteer fighters" the status of the military, allowed alternative service and included the period of mobilization in the total length of service.
