EU plans to impose new sanctions on Belarus
European Union proposed imposing a new package of sanctions on Belarus for its support of Russia's aggression towards Ukraine.
Bloomberg reports.
The publication notes that proposed measures will contribute to the imposition of many sanctions packages that the EU previously imposed on Russia. They will include restrictions on key technologies and the country's energy sector.
In particular, we are talking about a ban on the export of dual-purpose goods and technologies, as used for military purposes. They can increase the country's industrial potential.
EU also offers:
-
impose sanctions on oil, coal, steel products and gold
-
introduce trade restrictions on luxury items, investments and provision of certain services.
-
introduce measures aimed at hitting Belarus' aviation and energy sectors, as well as its key sources of income.
As in the case of sanctions against the Russian Federation, proposals regarding Belarus include exemptions for medicinal products, agricultural and food products. The proposed measures also include benefits for relevant financial transactions involving sanctioned individuals.
"Legislation will also allow EU to prosecute anyone who helps circumvent sanctions imposed on Belarusian individuals and legal entities," the message says.
Approval of proposed restrictions requires the support of all member states. At the same time, the EU is working on the tenth package of sanctions against Russia and on limiting the prices of Russian oil products.

On January 26, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Europe Council declared that the leadership of both the Russian Federation and Belarus should be held accountable for aggression in Ukraine.
