Duda calls to accept Ukraine into NATO, Scholz and Macron are still in favor of security guarantees
Andrzej Duda, President of Poland has called for Ukraine's admission to NATO, while Olaf Scholz, chancellor of Germany and Emmanuel Macron, president of France are still in favor of security guarantees
They made this statement during a meeting of the leaders of Poland, Germany and France, Tagesschau reports.
This is how Duda addressed NATO member states. He urged them to promptly accept Ukraine into the Alliance.
"Ukraine is waiting for a clear signal, a clear prospect of accession," the Polish president said and expressed hope that the upcoming July NATO summit in Vilnius would bring Ukraine "the light at the end of the tunnel it so much wants."
However, Macron and Scholz were more careful. In particular, the German chancellor said that the countries want to continue to work closely with each other on security guarantees for Ukraine. According to him, Germany, France, and their American allies have repeatedly sought dialogue to prepare for such a step.
"We will continue to do this very intensively. It is clear that security guarantees are needed in a very concrete form," Scholz said.
Macron, in turn, noted that the next European Council meeting and the July NATO summit will discuss what the future of collective security might look like. He also assured that the North Atlantic Alliance would provide Ukraine with all the support it is entitled to.
The French and German leaders assured that they want to support Ukraine as long as it needs it. Scholz emphasized that the German government is currently doing everything possible to ensure the production of ammunition in Europe and to support the working condition of the weapons supplied by Germany.
