Deputy FM Melnyk explains why China is interested in ending Russia's war in Ukraine
Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk says that China is interested in ending Russia's war against Ukraine because it violates the existing world order
In an interview with Morgenpost, he noted that the possibility of China helping to establish peace in Ukraine is quite real.
“It's not unrealistic. The Chinese, of course, are pursuing their own interests. But I believe that a fair, peaceful solution and the cessation of hostilities are more in Beijing's interest than this large-scale, endless 'earthquake' for the entire world order,” Melnyk said.
He called the conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Chinese leader Xi Jinping a step forward and added that Kyiv is waiting for his special representative Li Hui.
“Zelenskyy's phone conversation with Xi Jinping was a big step forward in strengthening our ties with China and stopping Russian aggression. Of course, China's view on this may differ from ours. For Kyiv, a prerequisite is the withdrawal of all Russian troops from the occupied territories. The devil is in the details, so we are looking forward to hearing what the Chinese special representative, who will soon join us, will propose,” Melnyk said.
