Zelenskyy reacts to news that Trump is shot at campaign rally
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the July 13 shooting in Pennsylvania that wounded U.S. presidential candidate and former president Donald Trump
Zelenskyy posted his reaction on X page.
"I am appalled to learn about the shooting of former U.S. President Donald Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania. Such violence has no justification and no place anywhere in the world. Never should violence prevail," Zelenskyy wrote.
Zelenskyy added that he was relieved to hear Trump was safe and wished him a speedy recovery. He also expressed condolences to the close ones of this attack’s victim, a rally attendee.
"I extend my wishes for strength to everyone who is horrified by this event. I wish America emerges stronger from this," Zelenskyy added.
Attack on Trump
On Saturday, July 13, an attempt was made on the life of presumptive U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. After gunfire was heard, Trump was evacuated from the stage with blood on his face, according to The New York Times.
In videos of Trump's speech, sounds similar to gunshots can be heard. Trump then touches his right ear and falls to the floor, and U.S. Secret Service agents rush to him.
The shooting left one attendee dead and two others critically injured, authorities say.
The Associated Press reports that the incident is being investigated as an attempted assassination of Trump.
"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening," Trump reacted after the attack.
Current US President Joe Biden condemned the shooting at Trump's rally.
Sources from the New York Post and CNN later identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was reportedly sitting on the roof of a manufacturing plant more than 119 meters from the stage.
