Ukrainian Navy confirms ferry hit in Russian port of Kavkaz
Ukraine's Navy has officially confirmed the destruction of the Conro Trader ferry in the port of Kavkaz in Russia's Krasnodar region
Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk shared the information on Radio Liberty.
"This ferry is one of the most crucial links in Russian military logistics for supplying the invading forces. It primarily transports fuel and lubricants, but it also carries weapons," he said.
The spokesperson didn't specify what kind of weapon was used to hit Conro Trader.
Earlier, the Operational Headquarters of the Krasnodar region reported that “as a result of the damage, the ferry sank in the waters of the Kavkaz port. There are no fires on the territory of the port itself.”
Later, the governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratev, wrote on his Telegram channel that 17 crew members had been rescued at the scene and that two more people were being searched for.
He added that booms were installed at the emergency site to prevent the spread of fuel, and the water surface was treated with a sorbent.
Earlier, the head of the Temryuk district of Kuban, Fedor Babenkov, said that on August 22 at 4:30 p.m. Ukraine allegedly attacked a railway ferry moored at the Kavkaz port.
According to him, there were 30 fuel tanks there. Emergency and special services were working at the site.
The Crimean Wind Telegram channel published a video from the site of the damage, where it is clear that the fire was caused by a missile. So far, there has been no official comment from the Ukrainian side.
Reference. Port Kavkaz is the fifth largest port in Russia and the second largest port in the Black Sea-Azov basin by cargo turnover. The port is one of the largest passenger ports in Russia and allows for rail ferries to be operated between the port and Varna in Bulgaria.
