'Ukraine needs powerful fleet': Navy on Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette's sea trials
Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk has commented on the sea trials of a corvette built for Ukraine in Turkey
He spoke about this on the Espreso TV channel.
“We need to prepare the crew for combat operations, this is the first stage. Individual training of crews is now underway. It begins, of course, with language training, because this is a ship built to NATO standards. The ship's service is carried out in accordance with the protocols of the North Atlantic Alliance. Accordingly, we have to learn all this. Specialists and sailors master their equipment, which they will operate. It can be a combat unit, communications, navigation. In fact, a ship has many combat units. After individual training is completed, collective training continues. In the Republic of Turkey, for example, where the corvette is a standard weapon, such training lasts for at least a year. Then there is a compatibility assessment,” Pletenchuk said.
In order to perform tasks and be allowed to perform them in the relevant groupings together with NATO ships, it is necessary to have an appropriate level of compatibility: communication, maneuvering, interaction, the Ukrainian Navy spokesman said.
“All these elements are practiced during the training of personnel. And then they have to pass the relevant exams, undergo internal and external assessments. We are well aware that a fleet cannot be built in one day in every sense of the word - from ship construction to crew training. We had to start this process yesterday, and we did. It is really complicated and long, but it is worth it. Because Russia's war against Ukraine will end, and we must continue to defend Ukraine's interests as a maritime power in the Azov-Black Sea region and in the world oceans as well. And it is impossible to do this without a powerful navy with such combat units as the corvette and other ships. Therefore, this is a vital necessity for Ukraine, even if we consider it from a purely economic point of view, given how much Ukraine depends on maritime exports and imports,” he added.
The Ukrainian Navy recently showed a video of sea trials of the powerful Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette, which was built for the Navy in Turkey.
