Russia loses over 1,000 wounded, killed in Ukraine daily in May - media
In May, the Russian army's losses in the war in Ukraine increased as it advanced in the northern Kharkiv region, losing over 1,000 killed and wounded daily
The New York Times reports this with reference to US and NATO intelligence.
According to the publication, the Russian losses in May averaged more than 1,000 wounded and killed. However, 25,000-30,000 new soldiers join the Russian army every month, which is about the same amount as it spends.
NYT sources point out that thanks to the tactics of "cannon fodder assaults," Russia was able to fulfill Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's goal of creating a buffer zone along the border to make it more difficult for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike deep into the country.
However, at the same time, Russia is sending poorly trained recruits to the front, which limits Moscow's ability to form more combat-ready units and increases losses.
According to NYT's Western intelligence sources, the Kremlin won't need to conduct a mobilization similar to this year's draft, as Russia will be able to replenish its losses at the front at the expense of its citizens, as well as mercenaries from Africa.
US officials also noted that Ukraine has changed its position, building fortifications and laying minefields to slow Russia's advance. The war is in favor of the defender, and Ukraine is focusing on holding its ground.
The publication emphasizes that the US estimates of Russian losses are based on satellite images, intercepted communications, information on social media and the media, as well as official Ukrainian and Russian statements.
- On May 25, the General Staff reported that Russia's losses in the war against Ukraine had reached 500,000.
