International Olympic Committee extends sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes
At the summit of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the vast majority of countries have voted to extend sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus
This is stated on the IOC's webpage.
These sanctions were imposed in February in response to the outbreak of war in Ukraine. They include a ban on holding international competitions in Russia and Belarus, and athletes from these countries cannot use their flags and anthems.
The December 9 summit extended these sanctions and decided to withdraw the Olympic Orders from the President of Russia and one of the vice prime ministers (whose name is not given), as well as to provide all possible support to Ukrainian teams and athletes.
The summit took into account the words of the President of France (where the next Olympics will be held), Emmanuel Macron, that even those countries that are at war should take part in the competition - because sports should not be politicized. But the majority of delegations did not agree with this.
“The Olympic Summit analysed in detail the impact of the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The vast majority of the participants agreed that the sanctions against the Russian and Belarusian states and governments, as those responsible for this blatant breach of the Olympic Truce and the Olympic Charter, must remain firmly in place,” the IOC statement said.
