In some parts of frontline there are up to five mines per square meter – Reznikov
In certain parts of the front line, you can find as many as five explosive mines in every square meter. Ukraine is now the most heavily mined country on Earth
Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov stated this in an interview with The Guardian, published today, August 13, 2023.
"Russian minefields are a serious obstacle for our troops, but not insurmountable. We have skilled sappers and modern equipment, but they are extremely insufficient for the front that stretches hundreds of kilometers in the east and south of Ukraine," the minister noted.
Appealing to the allies with an urgent request, Oleksiy Reznikov said that Ukrainian soldiers are digging five mines for every square meter in the places planted by Russian troops to try to disrupt Ukraine's counteroffensive, the article says.
According to Reznikov, during the current stage of the counteroffensive, Ukraine critically needs more equipment for demining - from minesweepers to Bangalore torpedoes.
"It is also vitally necessary to expand and expedite the training of sappers. It should be fast and systematic. Sappers are needed here and now. Their work saves lives and ensures the advancement of our troops," the minister added.
